Eloping in Oregon can be a romantic and memorable way to exchange vows, but it's important to make sure that you're following all of the legal requirements. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to legally elope in the state of Oregon.

Step 1: Obtain a Marriage License

The first step to legally eloping in Oregon is to obtain a marriage license. Both parties must be present to apply, and you'll need to provide identification, such as a driver's license or passport. The cost of a marriage license in Oregon is currently $60, and it's valid for 60 days from the date of issue.

Step 2: Find an Officiant

In Oregon, you'll need an authorized officiant to perform your wedding ceremony. This can be a judge, justice of the peace, or any other person authorized by the state to perform weddings. You can search for authorized officiants on the Oregon Secretary of State's website. I can also legally marry the two of you! Oregon has plenty of beautiful locations to choose from for your elopement ceremony, including beaches, waterfalls, and state parks. However, it's important to make sure that you're allowed to hold a wedding ceremony at your chosen location. Some parks and other public spaces may require permits or have specific rules about ceremonies. Be sure to check with the relevant authorities to ensure that you're following all of the rules and regulations.

Step 4: Obtain Witnesses (if necessary)

In Oregon, you're not required to have witnesses present at your wedding ceremony unless you're unable to sign the marriage license due to a physical disability. If you do need witnesses, they must be at least 18 years old and able to sign their name.

Say 'I Do' to Adventure: Eloping in Costa Rica's Most Beautiful Locations

Hey there! If you're thinking about eloping in Costa Rica, then let me tell you - you're in for a treat. Costa Rica is the perfect destination for a fun, relaxed, and adventurous elopement. From beautiful beaches to lush rainforests, Costa Rica has it all. And as a professional photographer, I'd be honored to capture your special day!

First things first, let's talk about the best time of year to get married in Costa Rica. The dry season is from December to April, which means it's the perfect time for a beach wedding. However, keep in mind that this is also peak tourist season, so you might want to plan ahead to secure your preferred location. May to November is the rainy season, but don't let that scare you away. The rainforests are at their lushest during this time, and you can always opt for a waterfall elopement or another location with cover if you're concerned about rain. Also, keep in mind how dreamy photos are in the rain! Rain creates a nature-made “moodiness” to the day! Seriously, I love photographing in the rain so I am ready to get wet if you are!

Keep in mind, too, that the photos on this blog were from when I visited in October-November! It rained off and on but it was always a very light rain! It didn’t start pouring until after the sun had set. The photos turned out so dreamy and it was (in my opinion) the perfect time to visit! No tourists! It felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.

Now, let's talk about some of the amazing locations where you can get married in Costa Rica.

1. Manuel Antonio National Park - This park is located on the Pacific coast and has beautiful beaches, lush forests, and stunning views. It's the perfect place for a beach wedding or a ceremony in the forest.

2. Arenal Volcano National Park - Arenal Volcano is an active volcano located in the northern part of Costa Rica. This park has hot springs, waterfalls, and amazing views of the volcano. It's a great location for a romantic elopement.

3. Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve - This reserve is located in the mountains of Costa Rica and has amazing views of the cloud forest. It's the perfect place for a nature-inspired elopement.

Now, let's talk about some fun activities you can do while you're in Costa Rica.

1. Ziplining - Costa Rica has some of the best ziplining in the world. You can zip through the rainforest and feel like you're flying.

1. Residency Requirements: There are no residency requirements for getting married in Costa Rica, which means you can get married as soon as you arrive in the country.

2. Paperwork: You will need to provide the following documents to get married in Costa Rica:

• A valid passport

• A birth certificate

• A single status affidavit (a document that certifies you are not currently married)

• If you have been married before, you will also need to provide a divorce decree or a death certificate.

All documents must be translated into Spanish and authenticated by the Costa Rican consulate in your home country.

1. Witnesses: You will need two witnesses to sign the marriage certificate. They can be friends or family members, but they must be over 18 years old and have a valid passport.

A lot of couples also opt to get married legally where they are from (like the United States, for example) for an easier experience and have their “wedding ceremony” in Costa Rica!

PRO TIPS:

1. The main roads are pretty great, but once you step into the outer cities and more rural side of the country, the roads are very rough and full of pot holes! Keep a look out and you’ll be fine.

2. Costa Ricans are so friendly! Try learning some basic phrases in Spanish as it will be super appreciated by locals.

3. Be aware of potential traffic, especially in the busy season! Lots of the roads only have one lane, and if there’s any kind of issue on the road, traffic will take FOREVER.

4. You will see so many cats and dogs, it will take everything in you not to take one home.

PRO TIP: If you’re planning on licking your partner up and down, be prepared for a mouth full of bug spray. (Worth it, though.)

LGBTQ+ couples looking to get married in Costa Rica:

In 2020, same-sex marriage was legalized, making it the first country in Central America to do so. This means that LGBTQ+ couples can legally get married in Costa Rica and have their marriage recognized by the government.

The legalization of same-sex marriage in Costa Rica is a major step forward for LGBTQ+ rights in the country. However, it's important to note that some people in Costa Rica still hold conservative views on LGBTQ+ issues, and discrimination can still occur. It's always a good idea to work with a wedding planner or other local experts who are familiar with the local culture and customs to ensure that your wedding day goes smoothly.

In my opinion, there’s so many lush areas to have a more “private” experience. Especially if you go in the off-season! You won’t have to worry about too many onlookers and could 100% have a beautiful LGBTQ+ elopement here in this country.

Exploring LGBTQ+ Wedding Destinations: Love in Vibrant Cities across the US

Love knows no boundaries, and neither should marriage. I previously wrote a blog on different locations LGBTQ+ couples can get married at in other countries, you can check it out HERE! In this blog, I’ll tell you about some of my favorite LGBTQ+ friendly cities in the United States, where you can embrace your love and tie the knot. As a queer photographer, I understand the importance of looking for locations that you can legally get married in, but also feel safe and comfortable.

A lot of my couples express feeling nervous during their ceremonies, because they are worried about public opinion. Some states and cities sometimes have my couples a little more concerned than other cities and states. So, I wanted to put together a list of cities a lot of my past clients have felt safe. And places I have personally felt safe being out and proud.

I’ll also be throwing in some cool facts about these cities and their history on supporting LGBTQ+ rights. Let’s get into it!

1. New York City, New York:

   Elopement Location: Central Park's Ladies Pavilion

   Best Time to Elope: Spring (April-June) or Fall (September-November)

   Highlights: Iconic LGBTQ+ landmarks like Stonewall National Monument, thriving LGBTQ+ community, and annual NYC Pride March.

   The pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history in New York City occurred in June 1969 during the Stonewall Riots. The Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village, became the site of a spontaneous rebellion against police harassment and discrimination. This event marked a turning point, galvanizing the LGBTQ+ community to fight for their rights and inspiring the formation of numerous LGBTQ+ organizations and advocacy groups.

   New York City is renowned for its vibrant LGBTQ+ culture and iconic events. The annual NYC Pride March, first held in 1970 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, has become one of the largest Pride events in the world, attracting millions of participants and spectators. The march is a celebration of LGBTQ+ identities, achievements, and ongoing struggles for equality.

2. Santa Barbara, California:

   Elopement Location: Santa Barbara Courthouse Sunken Gardens

   Highlights: Celebratory Denver PrideFest, supportive LGBTQ+ organizations, and a growing LGBTQ+ arts and culture scene.

   In the 1970s, LGBTQ+ individuals in Denver began organizing and forming advocacy groups. One notable organization was the Gay Coalition of Denver, which provided support, resources, and educational programs for the LGBTQ+ community. These grassroots efforts laid the foundation for future activism and paved the way for progress.

4. Kauai, Hawaii:

   Elopement Location: Hanalei Bay Beach

   Best Time to Elope: Year-round (avoiding hurricane season from June to November)

   Highlights: Aloha LGBTQ+ Pride Festival, breathtaking natural landscapes, and a warm and inclusive atmosphere.

   The LGBTQ+ history in Hawaii gained significant momentum in the 1970s. LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies in Hawaii began organizing and forming advocacy groups, such as the Hawaii Gay Rights Movement (HGRM). These organizations played a pivotal role in raising awareness about LGBTQ+ issues, advocating for legal protections, and fostering a sense of community and support.

   One notable milestone in Hawaii's LGBTQ+ history was the legal battle for marriage equality. In 1993, Hawaii's Supreme Court ruled that denying same-sex couples the right to marry was discriminatory. Although this decision was later overturned, it set in motion a series of legal victories and led to Hawaii becoming the first state to pass a same-sex civil unions bill in 2011, and eventually legalizing same-sex marriage in 2013.

   • Hawaii has a rich tradition of embracing diverse gender and sexual identities through its native culture. The concept of "māhū" in Hawaiian culture recognizes individuals who embody both masculine and feminine qualities and has been an important part of Hawaiian society for centuries.

5. Portland, Oregon:

   Elopement Location: Hoyt Arboretum

   Best Time to Elope: Summer (June-August) or early Fall (September-October)

   Highlights: Portland Pride Festival, progressive LGBTQ+ policies, and a thriving queer art and music scene.

   The LGBTQ+ community in Portland actively campaigned for legal protections and civil rights. In 1977, Oregon became one of the first states to pass a law prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, thanks to the efforts of LGBTQ+ activists. However, this protection was later repealed through a ballot initiative, leading to heightened activism and the formation of new organizations, such as Basic Rights Oregon, dedicated to restoring and advancing LGBTQ+ rights.

   • The Portland Lesbian Choir, established in 1990, is one of the oldest lesbian choirs in the United States. The choir celebrates the power of music and provides a space for LGBTQ+ women to come together and create harmonious voices.

   • The iconic Voodoo Doughnut, a popular doughnut shop in Portland, is known for its LGBTQ+-friendly atmosphere and its promotion of LGBTQ+ causes. They have created special doughnut designs to support LGBTQ+ rights and organizations.

The town became a sanctuary for those affected by the epidemic, offering support networks, healthcare resources, and a compassionate community. Organizations like the Provincetown AIDS Support Group (now known as AIDS Support Group Cape Cod) were established to provide care and assistance to those affected by HIV/AIDS.

   In recent decades, Provincetown has continued to champion LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity. It has been a vocal advocate for marriage equality, and in 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage, providing LGBTQ+ couples the right to marry and enjoy the same legal protections as heterosexual couples.

   • Provincetown is renowned for its annual Provincetown Carnival, a week-long LGBTQ+ celebration that draws thousands of visitors each year. The event features a vibrant parade, parties, drag shows, and themed events that embrace the spirit of diversity and pride.

Let me be honest when I am saying Kauai is my favorite place I have ever been. If you've been dreaming of a wedding in paradise, look no further than the breathtaking island of Kauai. With its stunning landscapes, pristine beaches, and vibrant culture, Kauai offers the perfect backdrop for your special day. As a wedding and elopement photographer, I've had the pleasure of capturing incredible moments on this enchanting island. In this blog, we'll explore three remarkable locations in Kauai that will make your wedding dreams come true. We'll also cover essential details like permitting rules, the best time of year to elope, legal requirements, and more. So, grab a coconut cocktail and let's dive in!

1. East Side: Embrace the Tropical Beauty The East Side of Kauai boasts lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and picturesque beaches. Remember to check the permitting rules for Hanalei Bay to ensure a seamless experience.

One remarkable location for exchanging vows is Tunnels Beach. Picture yourself standing on the golden sand, with the iconic Napali Coast as your backdrop. A permit is required for Tunnels Beach, so make sure to acquire one well in advance to secure your dream wedding spot.

Getting Married on the Napali Coast:

The Napali Coast is seriously even more stunning in person. With its towering emerald cliffs, hidden sea caves (seriously one of these caves look like it’s straight out of the Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean ride), and secluded beaches, this iconic stretch of coastline will take your breath away. However, please note that ceremonies directly on the Napali Coast are not permitted due to conservation efforts. But don’t worry! You can still charter a boat or helicopter to experience the mesmerizing beauty of this untouched paradise.

Best Time of Year to Elope in Kauai:

Kauai enjoys warm tropical weather year-round, but it's worth considering the seasons for your elopement. The summer months (May to September) offer sunny skies and calm waters, while the winter months (December to March) bring bigger swells and occasional rain. Spring and fall strike a delightful balance, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Choose the time that aligns with your preferences, and always check the weather forecast to plan your perfect day!

How to Legally Get Married in Kauai:

Getting hitched in Kauai is a breeze! To obtain a marriage license, both parties must appear in person at the Office of the Registrar in Lihue. You'll need valid identification, such as a driver's license or passport, and a fee of $65 (subject to change). There is no waiting period, and your license will be issued on the same day. Just remember, your marriage ceremony must be performed by an authorized officiant (I can sign as your officiant!), and two witnesses must be present.

You honestly can’t go wrong with pretty much anywhere in Kauai. They have SUCH good food there! But here were some of my personal favorites.

Passion Bakery Cafe - for a quick bite in the morning or for lunch. Or their “Fresh From the Fryer Malasadas” only on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday 7 AM till 12 Noon.

Saenz Ohana Breakfast - for the best breakfast you’ll ever have in your LIFE. I recommend their Eggs Benedict.

TOURS:

Makana Charters - for any view of the Napali Coast! And ask for “Super Dave” to be your captain!

Another important thing to note is that there is almost always traffic in the morning headed towards the south end of the island! And not just a little traffic, I am talking an INSANE amount of traffic. It once took me two and a half hours to go to the south end of the island one morning when it should only take 30 minutes. If you have a tour scheduled, or if you’re planning a wedding and need to be at the south end in the morning. Keep this in mind! And plan to be in traffic for 2+ hours.
